Anycon 2018

Anycon is a Cybersecurity conference offering a variety of events that apply to different interests within the Cybersecurity field including the offensive track, defensive track and an education track which is designed to help introduce the field to people who may not be very familiar with it.

Capture the Flag (CTF) events address both the offensive and defensive sides of Cybersecurity by letting teams battle head-to-head over flags by having one team attack a network and having the other team defend the network to prevent the attacking team from getting flags.

Both the offensive and defensive tracks have a variety of other events to attend including talks from experts in the field and demonstrations. The offensive side of the event will include demonstrations on breaking, bypassing and hacking security controls and other systems. The defensive side will have demonstrations more focused on preventing, detecting and deterring security incidents.

Mac OS X High Sierra 'root' security bug

On Wednesday, November 29th, 2017 Apple Inc. released a security update to patch a bug that allowed users to unlock and change settings in the Users and Groups section of System Preferences. This security flaw was discovered on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017 and worked by a user selecting the lock in System Preferences to unlock the settings and make them changeable, then they would enter "root" in the username field and leaving the password field blank, then when the user selects Unlock several times in the dialogue box, the settings would then unlock and the user had root privileges with the settings on the computer. This was a bug that existed in OS X High Sierra 10.13.1 but the bug was patched in OS X High Sierra 10.13.2 which was released on November 29th. Although this patch was released, even if the user installs the update the bug will still exist unless the computer is restarted after the update.
